This article talks about the things i face during my six months industrial training at PEL EXTRACT LIMITED
EXPERIENCE GAINED AT PEL EXTRACT LIMITED
The Student Industrial Training Work Experience Scheme has availed me the opportunity to have a practical and first-hand experience on what work entails, this experience has taught me to be a good team player, to be diligent, committed and punctual in everything. A lot of experience was acquired; being able to see various equipments and machines only imagined prior to the training, to see some food additives and know what they are used for.
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AT PEL EXTRACT LIMITED
The problems I encountered during the course of the training include:
1) Restriction of access to some equipment.
2) Difficulty in getting a place of attachment.
More problems encountered;
1) Restriction of access to some equipment
Some of the equipments were inaccessible by any I.T student and this prevented me from having significant knowledge of how to operate or work with such equipment. Example, the filtration machine.
2) Difficulty in getting a place of attachment
ADVISE TO SIWES
Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme Programme is a government policy that is aimed at widening the knowledge of students, which also helps to make them more articulated for more challenges ahead of time. On the other hand, it gives the students more privilege to mingle with professional graduates and the ability to interrelate the theoretical aspect of their study with the practical. Thus, I come up with the following recommendations on how to improve the programme:
1) Schools should ensure that all students go for industrial training in establishments which is related to their field of study.
2) More funds should be allocated to the Industrial Training Fund for effective and proper functioning of the board.
3) Since the SIWES programme has come to stay, the government and the board in charge of SIWES should help students by writing to various companies and establishments to accept students for SIWES programme, and give the students their monthly allowance throughout the programme. This is because most students stay away from their homes and schools, thereby spending much money in the course of the programme.
MY ADVISE TO FUTURE PARTICIPANTS
1) Go to places related to their places related to their field of study and at the same time seek for knowledge.
2) Be close to your industrial supervisor
3) Ask questions
4) Be punctual to your place of attachment
5) Be humble to everyone in the company
6) Take notes
In other words,
1) They should appreciate students contributions to the company by compensating them on a monthly basis
2) They should assist students by giving them the right knowledge on what they do and be ready to welcome any question whatsoever.
CONCLUSION
This Training has exposed me to the procedures of wine making and to the principles and maintenance of its equipments and instruments. It was able to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical aspect of Food Science and Technology. It also helped me to interact with different people around me during the training.
The Companies where students are attached should make sure that the students are well placed, trained, supervised and allowed to assist in doing major works and also SIWES should make it mandatory to organization to accommodate students for their training.
Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a creditable idea and should be further encouraged as it helps students to get the right knowledge about their respective fields and the economy of the country. It prepares them ahead of the challenges they may encounter.
