EXPERIENCE GAINED, CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED AND CONCLUSION

1. EXPERIENCE GAINED

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme I participated in at Hyclass and Nalis Quality Bakery provided me with extensive exposure to some of the practical industrial components of the food science and technology field. I was fortunate to know how to make bread of a high quality and to have been exposed to procedures for equipment maintenance, plant sanitation, and quality control. Additionally, the ability to use a variety of processing tools, such as an electric oven, electric weighing balance and a mixer, was developed. During the training, I learned about some of the company’s standards and ethics, like showing up to work on time and not leaving before the deadline. By exposing me to the working world and preparing me for competencies, the training shaped my character. I was also able to meet people of different ages, ranks, tribes, and genders. In conclusion, the program was extremely instructive, beneficial, and successful. Nevertheless, the scheme’s intended goal was accomplished.

 

2. CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

Even though the program was very educational and interesting, I still had problems. The following are some of the difficulties I encountered prior to and during the training:

  • It was made clear that students will not receive any kind of allowance. Since I had to be on time for work, this makes it hard for me to get to my workplace.
  • Securing a place for the industrial training was quite strenuous due to availability of I.T students from polytechnics. Most companies or establishments prefer to accept polytechnics student who engage in one year programme to university students who engage only in six months training.
  • Accommodation was not provided for I.T students. This made me to pay for accommodation for the period the training lasted.
  • Equipment such as electric mixer was in faulty sate. This deprived me from having thorough knowledge of their mode of operation.

3. RECOMMENDATIONS

Despite the fact that SIWES achieved many of its stated objectives, the following recommendations are made to improve the program’s qualitative context.

  • Students should make an effort to participate in industry training since it adds practical knowledge to the academic aspects taught at universities.
  • I also think that students should be provided a reasonable stipend during their training.
  • The programme should be scheduled in such a way that it corresponds with the school calendar, allowing students to finish the programme.
  • In order to boost production and minimize work stress, the organisation should fix defective equipment.
  • Students should engage in establishments where the program’s stated goals and objectives will be met.

 

4. CONCLUSION

Every student has the chance to receive industrial training in their area of study through the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). It is a true eye-opener in the sense that it aids in instilling practical knowledge in students. The programme has significantly broadened my knowledge and sharpened my focus in my field. In a few of weeks, I was able to get the most pertinent and useful practical industry training experience. Last but not least, I’d like to emphasis that SIWES is a really pertinent curriculum that students should use for their professional growth before graduating.
