The biggest new feature of WhatsApp on Android: we can now say goodbye to annoying audios

  • Audio transcription to text is now available on Android. You can read the audios that are sent to you
  • It is available for users who have Meta AI

We all have that one friend or family member who constantly sends audio messages, or maybe you are that person yourself (I know I am). If you are tired of having to listen to annoying audio messages, WhatsApp has a solution: you can now read them .

Sometimes it’s easier to explain something in audio form, or maybe you’re walking down the street and you’re having trouble writing a long message. Audios are very useful in these cases, but many times those who receive them are in a situation where it’s difficult to hear it (at work, in class or on public transport and without headphones ). This will now be a problem of the past, thanks to the new transcription of voice notes in WhatsApp.

This is how audio transcription works on WhatsApp

This is, without a doubt, the biggest new feature of WhatsApp in years. I have nothing against audio messages, as I usually send a lot of them, but many times I can’t listen to one because I’m busy or in some situation that prevents me from doing so. Reading that message would be easier , especially when we receive those one- or two-second audio messages in which the other person just says “it’s okay.” Why do they do this?

WhatsApp now allows you to transcribe audio files, you no longer have to listen to them, you can read them. This feature has been available for about a year in the iOS beta , but it has now debuted on Android, directly in the final version of the application; you don’t need to have the beta to use it .

What is required is access to Meta AI ; in our tests we have only been able to use audio transcription on WhatsApp accounts with access to Meta AI , which means that, at least for now, it is not possible to officially access this tool in Europe. However, it is available for Android devices in Latin America and the United States.

To access the audio transcription, follow these steps :

  • We hold down on the audio message that we want to transcribe
  • Click on the three-dot button in the upper right corner
  • We select ‘ Transcribe ‘

The first time we use this tool, we will have to select the language in which the audio will be transcribed and download the necessary files .

And that’s it, we can now transcribe audio messages to text on Android. From now on we have two options: we can listen to that voice note that has been sent to us, or we can read it. This is, without a doubt, a tool that we have been waiting for a long time and that will become part of our daily life when using the application.
